The Blair Witch Copycat Project
22 April 2017 | by (Old London, New England) – See all my reviews

In the literary world, plagiarism is a dirty word - in the movie industry, it's just another way to fleece the public. The makers of 'Phoenix Forgotten' demonstrate their cynicism and creative bankruptcy by churning out an anemic Sci-Fi copycat version of 'The Blair Witch Project' without offering a single moment of vitality or originality.

In this dismal re-tread, some lights are seen across the Arizona skies, and three teenagers disappear after they go hunting for UFOs. Twenty years later, a documentary film-maker discovers some found footage which suggests what happened to them. The Blair Witch parallels are shameless - aliens in the Southwest desert are substituted for a malevolent spirit in rural Maryland - a trio of high-schoolers stand in for three college students - unseen spooky ETs moan in the darkness instead of an invisible backwoods spook. Apart from these minor variations, the two films' plot and climax are uncannily similar. The second-rate acting, third-rate direction, fourth-rate script and fifth-rate cinematography are also pale imitations of the original. 'Phoenix Forgotten' runs for 80 minutes, but feels a lot longer - this cheap imposter should be avoided at all costs.
