'Furious 8' Tops $900 Million Worldwide as Disney's 'Born in China' Bests All Newcomers

2 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The top of this weekend's box office looks a lot like last weekend as the top three films remain the same, once again headlined by The Fate of the Furious as it closes in on $1 billion worldwide. As for the weekend's new releases, Disney's Born in China topped the list with the best start for a Disneynature title since the $10.6 million opening for 2012's Chimpanzee. Otherwise, WB's Unforgettable, Open Road's The Promise, Cinelou's Phoenix Forgotten and A24's Free Fire all under-performed. At #1 for a second weekend in a row is Universal's The Fate of the Furious, which performed mostly as expected, dropping 61% in its second weekend and bringing in an estimated $38.6 million as its domestic cume now climbs to $163.6 million. Internationally, the film continued its impressive overseas run bringing in an estimated $163.4 million from 65 territories as its overseas total balloons to $744.8 million for a global cume that stands at $908.4 million. »

Reynolds is also a producer on the films with “Deadpool” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning along with Drew Goddard assisting. “John Wick” co-director David Leitch came on board to lead “Deadpool 2” last fall after Tim Miller dropped out due to creative differences with Reynolds.

The superhero sequel also recently cast “Atlanta” breakout Zazie Beetz as the mutant mercenary Domino.

Steven Spielberg Pentagon Papers Drama Gets 2017 Oscar Season Release

22 April 2017 10:27 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Steven Spielberg’s untitled Pentagon Papers drama announced itself as a major awards season contender in this year’s Oscars race.

The film, which is rumored to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, will open in limited release on December 22, 2017. It will expand nationwide on January 12, 2018, a week after the Golden Globes broadcast. Hanks will play hard-charging Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, with Streep handling the role of iron-willed publisher Katharine Graham. The pair made the decision to publish a classified history of the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War over the objections of the Nixon administration. Courageous journalist dramas have played nicely with Oscar voters — 2015’s “Spotlight” won Best Picture, while 2005’s “Good Night and Good Luck” and 1976’s “All the President’s Men” earned a bevy of nominations.

The opening slot puts the Spielberg film in the hunt for Academy Awards gold along with the likes of Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing, »

Margot Robbie to Play Queen Elizabeth in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ (Exclusive)

21 April 2017 3:33 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Margot Robbie is in negotiations to play Queen Elizabeth in Focus and Working Title’s “Mary Queen of Scots,” opposite Saoirse Ronan.

Josie Rourke is directing the film with Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin producing.

The movie is based on the true story of Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, only to find herself condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.

The film has yet to be greenlit, but sources say things are headed in the right direction. If a greenlight is given, the film would likely go sometime later this year.

Following the success of big hits like last summer’s “Suicide Squad” and “Wolf of Wall Street,” this latest role gives Robbie a prestige part to add to her portfolio. The endeavor could even have awards season potential given Focus’ track record of pushing Oscar campaigns for its prestige film. »

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are obviously a little attached at the hip. They’ve made five movies together — “Gangs of New York,“ “The Aviator,” “The Departed,” “Shutter Island” and “The Wolf Of Wall Street” and the short, “The Audition” — but it feels like any time a Scorsese project is announced, DiCaprio’s name is not far behind.

And while that might be the more enticing storyline, let’s begin with the (relatively) smaller piece of news.

Box Office: ‘Fate of the Furious’ Stays on Top; ‘Unforgettable,’ ‘The Promise’ Bomb

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Fate of the Furious” is racing to defend its title at the top of the box office, while a number of new releases including “The Promise” and “Unforgettable” are being left in the dust.

Universal’s eighth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise proved to be a global box office titan when it opened last weekend to a record-shattering $532.5 million. This time around looks to tell mostly the same story — while domestic grosses slipped 61% from its first to second weekend, the movie is still easily topping the box office with $38.7 million from 4,329 locations.

But slipping domestic earnings (and lower U.S. grosses than “Furious 7,” which pulled over $250 million in its first two weekends versus “Fate’s” current sum of $163.6 million) are majorly overshadowed by the movie’s international appeal. A bankable, diverse cast including Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron is leading the film, directed by F. Gary Gray, »

Tribeca Film Review: Debra Winger in ‘The Lovers’

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s been painful in recent years to see Todd Solondz, the once-inspired director of “Welcome to the Dollhouse” and “Happiness,” making his characters so lowly and pathetic they no longer seem real. If Solondz had kept his empathy for life’s everyday losers but put aside his compulsion to punish them for it, he might have made a comedy of barbed humanity like Azazel Jacobs’ “The Lovers.”

It stars Debra Winger and Tracy Letts as Mary and Michael, a couple in their late 50s who have entered the dead-zone phase of marriage. Their passion has left the building, but more than that, they’ve stopped pretending they have anything to say to each other. Their relationship is a glumly polite series of going-through-the-motions rituals (even when they sit in front of the TV having a glass of red wine, they’re drinking alone…together), yet the movie observes their »
